Lord Lawrence has consulted all of us, and we've come to the conclusion that the 21st will be the best day for us all to depart. We have until then to make all of our arrangements. I'm sure many of you have already been doing so, but this is the time to start making those final.

I don't suppose you've reached any sort of decision regarding the offer? I only ask because the time before the choice is made for you is approaching at a reasonable pace. It's still entirely in your hands, of course.

I realize we've only just gotten to the end of one trouble, but I believe I may have started another one in my search for things to take my mind off of that last one.

What would you do if you found a woman who had her memories wiped clean by magic, and it seemed very clear that the intent behind it was not for her own benefit but to attack a high profile family?

I need to take my mind off of things I cannot change, and so I decided we should have this conversation while you're still here.

I find you very familiar-looking, but for the life of me I cannot place where I've seen you before. The Palace in Norey, of course, but I feel ... Hn. There's something else.

Did you once live in the north of Dentoria?

This section I've been working on seems to be coming into focus with some interesting results. I decided to translate some of these last sections that fall after the last one in Kilian, and it points to something.

"It's gotten so bad that I can't leave the house. I must continue to fight though. I can't let them win. They can't take Baethan from me and my family. Millerna must continue this fight too. I hope she'll keep this going. Her own secret records will keep this investigation going.

I wish I had been able to do this on my own, but now I need her to be strong. I need her help. I need her to continue forward."

There must be a hidden record that Millerna kept. Something akin to these two.

I've broken it.

[Kilian]

"It was then that I knew Millerna would now be able to help any further in my quest. Our quest. I must find another way to go forward, but I must have help."

The key is MILERNABCDFGHJKOPQSTUVWXYZ, and it is positionally shifted four positions to the right. There are a number of different runes that enter in the equation every three instances of a specific character, and these are determined per chapter. One letter in their Kilian name is always the one you need, and this missing letter should be obvious from context. The runes were meant to be confusing, but with the main pattern broken they're simply annoying.

A name? [power rune]hoocvqr

Common doubles: [wind rune]cc, xss, khoo, tr[wind rune][wind rune], xvccw, tswwhnoc

I still cannot find the context of places I've seen these. The runes cannot be what I imagined though. They're an additional layer in a way, but ... it makes no sense at all for them to be the spelled out sounds they represent. Perhaps simply one of the letters for each rune?

Bah!

Everything is assembled, and we have the artifact here. I've also pulled the children into the room for their opinions in case we need them. As soon as Celeste is ready to begin we'll start.

We do have an idea for finding this artifact in your store. Based on the fact that any illusion magic must consume more of itself for every pair of eyes it has to affect, we came up with the idea that overwhelming the object with the presence of a great many eyes would force it to reveal itself. Now obviously we thought this might not make you very comfortable, but we do have something of an abundance of numbers to use in this instance. Also, we know you're rather curious yourself.

Are you willing to go along with this plan?

Once again, someone close to us was hurt because of this blindfold the Clerics insist we wear while they lead us through the thorns. It's a game even children would refrain from playing. Dragons, what next?

She didn't deserve this, and please understand that we'll be holding you responsible for all of this.

Ever since the children described what they were feeling down below Aoife's shop as smelling of Prudence and Patience, I can't help but wonder if one of the treasures we're looking for is down there. I neglected to inform them of the connection to the Aesdana because of their fear of dragons, but there's a good chance that the connection isn't coincidental. There is something down there, and Aoife is as curious as we are about it.

We just couldn't find it. And I'm not sure how to, to be honest.

These questions have been going on long enough.

[Filter: Aoife, in Kilian]

Hello.

I realize we have not been around the shop very much lately, so we haven't had a chance to tell you about certain things. For instance, it seems that certain authorities seem to have connected us to Caoilinn because of our search for her. It appears that they've finally taken an interest in all of these disappearances.

This comes at a very bad time, of course, as all of these seem to do. By all realistic standards, Caoilinn will be impossible to find by this point because they made no early effort. Additionally, my wife is Megami, and I am certain you've read at least some of what has happened to her home. These constant un-Kilian questions have her greatly agitated, because she really wants to help but it takes her to a very dark place again.

We're all very good with puzzles, our lives have depended on them in certain ways. What we keep coming back to is how many connections all of these disappearances have with your store. We've never been harmed by any of the magic you use in your store, and so I highly doubt it's any of your works that are the problem. However, this land breeds strange things happening. I was wondering if, perhaps in all the time you've been working at your location, you've noticed anything strange happening? Something clearly out of place.

Can you not tell that she's a little too distressed to be answering questions like that? Dragons above, just when I thought I understood this city.

[Filter: Sawyer and Faith]

Have either of you been approached by Kilians about Caoilinn this week? I realize that this may seem unusual, but I was in the city with Nessa and we were approached. Obviously this isn't something ... ideal for them to be talking with her about at the moment.

I can't believe that when we actually need help there is nothing but silence, but after the trail has long since gone cold the curiosity is starting to pick up. How do they expect to find her now after so much time has passed?

Bah. I can't begin to understand them.

Alright, dear. I believe ... it may be time to have this discussion. You don't have to stop working, that's not what this is about. You need it, we both know that.

You also need to mourn. You will do yourself no favours at all to keep something of this magnitude inside of yourself. You will not heal completely if you're only using one method to keep yourself going. And I know it's going to hurt, but you need to let some of it out. I promise it's just me here now, and you don't have to be strong. You can let it go for a few moments, relieve yourself of some of the weight, and get back to your tasks.

Wounds need to breathe from time to time, dear, and this one is terrible. Please, just let it breathe for a few moments. I promise that you're strong enough to pick yourself back up afterward.

Hn. Do you know why that didn't work exactly, Aileen? Was it the problem you suspected, that there wasn't enough of hold here for you, or is there some issue with the preparations? I didn't see anything at all, I'm afraid.

Well, I think you've mostly packed, and we're getting close to a good time to be getting on the road. You should be able to make it to a good village tonight from what Aileen has told me if you leave within the next couple of hours. I am confident in all of your abilities to come through this intact, and I trust all of you to follow Aileen's directions well enough to navigate the dangers.

I wish you all safety and good luck.

I had a hunch that I might be onto something checking into the public record of rumours of the roads north of the city might be useful. At the very least I thought it would be a nice break from the bemused stares of librarians when the realized I was looking into Scrying.

I found one that describes a manor on a hill, and the traveler warns of a black fog that's surrounded it. Perhaps I've found the correct place?

Hmm. I just finished with a story that has given me some pause because I've heard parts of it before. It's certainly raised a few questions in my mind.

A family of forest nobles who generation after generation would breed strong mage to strong mage in an attempt to create the most powerful mage who ever lived. They would often have far more children than they needed at the end of a generation though. Having so many members of a family feel valued was a problem for them. Eventually one of them wanted something else in life, and stole their notes to sell to a foreigner for a great fortune. He was hunted down, and the description of what the family did to him is one half of the horror story.

Finally after hundreds of years one of the lines produced a set of twins. One tested off the scale for Light magic, and one for Dark magic. Unfortunately, when they were both still young, the foreigners showed up -- they seem to be the thing that is to be feared in this one -- and invaded the family’s manor. The story concludes with one of the twins being whisked away for a foreign breeding program, and the twin left behind becoming a monster because of the unbalancing -- their efforts to bring powerful mages into the world destroying them in the end.

The story is an obvious fiction in places, but ...

A small warning to anyone about to read this: It could very well disturb you.

I was reading this one about an old man and his family who lived on a hill. The old man sought the secrets of life and death, but his daughter loves the work her family wrote over the ages that lets her look into places around the world. Day and night, night and day she ignored her father’s rantings about how she had to help, and she hid herself away with her favourite spell. The book shows her pouring over scenes from across the world, and the more she casts it the deeper it shows her retreating into the house.

Years pass, and she gets more and more worried about the outside. She doesn’t go out because the entire world is at her fingertips, and she’s safe behind four walls. Her father’s had more than enough though. He finally finds her in the middle of casting the spell, and he demands that she help him. If she’s only good for the same old magic that her family’s been obsessed with she needs to show him where to find the secrets of how to live forever in her spell immediately.

She turns her spell to it, but it’s magic that was never meant to interact in any way. The worst happens, and a … something gets loosed into the house and begins sucking the life out of everyone. Her father and her are the last survivors, and he tries to drag her from the house to save her before its too late. She bites and kicks the whole way there, and the book’s letting out the sounds of both her fury and the spirit in the background. He gets her to the door, and throws her outside. The spirit slams into him, and he’s killed immediately. The book shows the spirit wrapping its mist tendrils around the girl’s leg, and her descent into sleep.

On the last page there’s a grave with a straw sticking out of it, and a bell. I’ve never seen anything like it. The last thing that it shows is the bell ringing.

I feel this section has the best selection of strange kinds of magic that I'd never even considered before. I'm not sure if this one's even possible, but all the hairs on my neck stood up the entire time I read it.

The prediction of not being able to find an inn has come true much sooner than I would've hoped. So far not a single soul wants to help with our predicament either. I realize that they don't want to accommodate us, and I realize that we're the exact sort of people they don't want in their country. I realize that they don't have to extend us any courtesy. Unfortunately, even knowing all of these inevitabilities, I am still not particularly enthused by this situation at all.

Hm. Well, I suppose no better time will present itself.

[Filter: Sawyer]

I will begin wrapping this question in the most delicate of tones I can muster because I know that this is all possibly awkward territory. I've stayed out of your affairs in these matters because the last time I was thoroughly ungracious, I know. However, days in, it strikes me as a little odd given his other circumstances, and I'd like to be friends enough to have this sort of discussion.

Is Korvin trying to create something between you and him? I realize that it's quite easy to give you praise, but it seems that he goes quite out of his way to do it for you lately.
